Bio
Clarinet
Inès studied in Paris with Jean-Max Dussert and Jérôme Voisin, principal clarinettist of the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France. She has performed at the Lugano Music Festival in Switzerland with pianist Ulrich Koella, and has appeared as an opening and closing soloist at festivals and cultural events in Angoulême, Provence, Paris and Carcassonne. She was also invited to record works by the contemporary French composer Tristan Murail.
In 2017, cellist Yo-Yo Ma selected Inès to serve as principal clarinettist of the YMCG Symphony Orchestra and to play with him on its Asian tour. The following year, she co-founded the Debussy Music and Arts Centre in Taipei, an organisation dedicated to making classical music more accessible. Since then, she has presented more than thirty lecture-recitals in France, the United States and Taiwan.
Inès performs regularly in Europe, particularly in France, Italy and the United Kingdom, as well as in Taiwan and the United States.
Piano
Inès began studying the piano at the age of three as part of the compulsory piano curriculum at professional music schools in Taiwan. From the age of seven to eighteen, she studied with Tsai Hsing-yi, a pupil of Rolf-Peter Wille, and in 2002 she received lessons from the distinguished pianist Ruth Slenczynska.
She has more than twenty years of experience as a piano teacher and accompanist and has taught approximately fifty piano students during this period. Several of her pupils have subsequently gained admission to highly regarded conservatoires in Paris and the United States.
Teaching Info
Clarinet
Lessons are carefully structured around three main areas of instrumental technique:
Embouchure: developing muscle memory, flexibility and control in order to produce a clear and consistent sound.
Breathing: learning breathing techniques suited to the clarinet, with particular attention to airflow, breath support and the coordinated use of the diaphragm and surrounding muscles.
Relaxation and posture: learning to use different parts of the body efficiently, avoiding unnecessary tension while developing strength, breath capacity and endurance.
Piano
Piano lessons focus on three principal areas of technique:
Hand shape: supporting the fingers through the hand’s natural arch, and learning to activate the arch while keeping the fingers relaxed and responsive.
Articulation: cultivating a clear, even non-staccato/non-legato (“pearly”) touch, characteristic of the traditional French school of piano playing.
Use of the body: coordinating the arms, shoulders and back using principles drawn from the Russian school to produce sound freely and avoid unnecessary tension.
Musical understanding and interpretation
For both instruments, musical interpretation is approached through analysis at three interconnected levels, from the broadest structure to the smallest details:
- the overall form of the piece;
- musical sentences and phrases;
- individual motifs.
At each level, attention is given to rhythm, harmony and melody, helping students understand how a piece is constructed and how this understanding can inform their interpretation.
I believe in a communicative and supportive approach that enables each student to develop their own personal sound, play with as much freedom and relaxation as possible, and express themselves confidently through music. My aim is to help students reach a level at which they can fully enjoy playing, while progressing according to their own needs and ambitions.
Lessons are available in English, French and Mandarin.
