Bio
I’m a violin and theory teacher based in Moseley. I’ve played with many professional orchestras in the UK as a freelance violinist and I’m also a composer. I studied at the Royal College of Music, the National Centre for Orchestral Studies (Goldsmiths College, London) and the University of Huddersfield for a master’s degree in composition.
Teaching Info
I enjoy helping violin students from beginner to advanced, and I put an emphasis on developing aural and theory skills, if the student so wishes. We go at your pace, to learn whatever styles of music you wish to play, but I only ask that you put in some practice! We can prepare for grade exams if you wish (and I will help you with aural tests as well), learn how to sightread music, and even learn some techniques for how to survive in an orchestra.
If you are a beginner (or a restarter after many years) I will help you get set up with the fundamentals and help you avoid bad habits and unnecessary tension.
For theory students I can take you through ABRSM theory up to Grade V, then Trinity onwards to VIII, or I can tailor a course specifically to your needs; it could be just music appreciation, harmony and counterpoint, or remedial work for students at school or university.
Ivor is definitely a trustworthy tutor. He's friendly, humble and patient, which allows me to relax and play in front of him. He points out areas where improvement is required gently. He's generous in sharing his precious knowledge, e.g. how he would interpret a musical piece, emotions required and how I should bow. This saves me a lot of time and trouble! I'm glad to have Ivor as my tutor.

Ivor spent the lesson tactfully assessing my current knowledge level and then we discussed what areas I might find the most useful to explore in theory lessons. I am satisfied that he plans to teach me what will suit my purposes best. I'm very pleased to have found him.
