Bio

Having started the cello at the age of 5, Joanna went on to gain a Silver Bursary for gaining one of the highest marks in the country in her ABRSM Grade 8 exam at the age of 11. At the age of 13, she became one of the youngest ever members of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain, which she played in for 5 years under conductors such as Edward Gardner, John Wilson, Vasily Petrenko and Semyon Bychkov in all the major concert halls in the UK, including at the Royal Albert Hall as part of the BBC Proms. She has since performed as part of the English Chamber Orchestra. In 2019, Joanna completed her Bachelor Degree at Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, studying with Professor Tim Lowe. She graduated with distinction and a Concert Recital Diploma (Premier Prix) for exceptional performance in her Final Recital. While in London, she was awarded at national and international competitions including first place in the Ivan Sutton International Music Competition as well as the Muriel Taylor Cello Competition, previous winners including cellists Steven Isserlis and Raphael Wallfisch. Joanna has taken part in masterclasses with Steven Isserlis, Raphael Wallfisch, Adrian Brendel, Robert Demaine, the Emerson Quartet and Andrew Shulman, among others. From September 2019 to June 2022, Joanna has been studying with Professor Thomas Demenga as part of her Master of Performance studies at Musik-Akademie Basel. After winning the annual Schlusskonzert Competition, she was awarded the opportunity to play Tchaikovsky’s Rococo Variations with Kammerorchester Basel in September 2020. She was awarded a scholarship from Rahn Kulturfonds in November 2020 and won the 2nd prize for cello at the Rahn Musikpreis 2022 for strings. Since her studies in Switzerland, Joanna has enjoyed a varied freelance career in the UK, particularly playing regularly with the London Symphony Orchestra.

Teaching Info

I have been involved in teaching since as young as 13 years old, and it is a true joy to see students enjoying learning the cello. I am patient and encouraging, and I am quick to adapt to exactly what the student would like to achieve with their music lessons, whether that be to complete music exams, start a new instrument or just continue to love playing this beautiful instrument!
