Bio

I have taught singing for nearly 40 years, having studied at Trinity College of Music – a combination of peripatetic teaching along side private practice. I took the advanced professional teaching qualification as a member of AOTOS, keeping abreast of new teaching styles and techniques.

As a classically trained soprano, I have much experience singing on the concert platform in oratorio, recital and opera. I still sing when the opportunities come my way. I have trained to teach Singing for Parkinsons and also work with dementia residents in two care homes.

I moved to Beverley from the South East in 2018 and now teach 2 days a week at St Peter’s school in York. I have also taught at Hull University and Hymers College. Several choristers from Beverley Minster have gone on to study singing at the RNCM and Oxford. Another student is about to start her vocal studies at the RNCM in the autumn. A former pupil has become a very successful soloist and BBC New Generations Artist.

I have a 100% successful examination pass rate, with many students achieving grade 8 and diplomas. I use three boards, ABRSM, Trinity and the LCM for music theatre.

I am passionate about the health benefits that singing can offer and have seen so many students grow in confidence and improve their mental health. Whilst many love working towards an exam many just want to sing for their own enjoyment or to join a choir. One size doesn’t fit all!  I have an 8 year old springador called Archie who enjoys sitting in on lessons and has become a bit of a therapy pet for those who love dogs!

I offer a half price 30 minute consultation to see if the chemistry works. Some students come weekly, others less often but I am very flexible. I can teach during the day when not in York.

I have an updated DBS certificate.

When not teaching I am a funeral and wedding celebrant in which I incorporate all the skills I have learnt over  the years as a performer.

Teaching Info

IF IN DOUBT BREATH OUT is the way I now teach, promoting a safe and effective technique. The diaphragm word is barely mentioned! I start each lesson with a 5/10 minute warm up depending on the duration of the lesson and all aspects of technique are discussed and worked on; we will then turn to the chosen song of whatever genre!  This is very flexible given the age and ability of the student. A consultation session is the way for me to find out exactly what the student is hoping to gain and achieve as well as seeing if we are a good fit!!

I play the piano for lessons so backing tracks are not often used, but they can be helpful if I am teaching on-line (several students have lessons on zoom). Most students have an idea of what they want to sing but, if not, I will suggest some ideas. I do expect them to provide their own music but will advise and guide them as to where and how to obtain it.

There is normally much laughter involved. I will always aim for the student to finish the lesson on a high!!

I have also trained as a teacher for people with Parkinsons and Dementia.

Louise completely changed the way I sing. She helped me to understand my voice, the styles of music that suited me best and how to use it in a healthy way. She helped me to get rid of bad singing habits and taught me exercises and techniques that I still use today. She also wasn't just a singing teacher, she became a friend and I owe a lot to her.

Mrs McPhee has been teaching me for two years now and it feels like I have known her forever! Her style of teaching and genuine care for her students is something that's really hard to find in many teachers. She has taught me so many new things and is always there for me in every situation, music related or not. I would recommend her to everybody!
- Arina (15)
Louise is a fantastic teacher who has really helped me overcome a fear of singing in front of people. She is so encouraging and helps you believe you can do it. Somewhat unusually, I also started to sing to see if it would help with my sleep apnoea- and it has!! I'd recommend her in a trice
- Fiona (early 50s)
Louise gave me the confidence and guidance to follow my passion for singing. But most importantly, she was there for me in my difficult moments, when singing felt like an escape and a safe space to find joy in a time that was really hard in my life. I owe so much to Louise for not just supporting me but for helping me find my voice and for teaching me to believe in myself. Thank you Louise for never doubting me and for helping me to find enjoyment in life again.
- Stephanie (22)
I started singing with Louise at a young age , after she spotted me singing in the choir at our local church. With her regular teaching and encouragement, I quickly progressed through the grades and developed a real love for solo singing. Louise always created a supportive atmosphere, and we even sang in a Christmas opera Amahl and the Night visitors together!
- Bertie (22, professional musician)
Studying singing with Louise throughout my pre- university years was a key part of my vocal development. Her tailored guidance across a wide range of genres helped me grow into a versatile and confident singer, especially while preparing for university and then future auditions. She provided invaluable support helping me choose and refine the right repertoire and technique. The welcoming and positive space she created made lessons enjoyable, productive and inspiring. I'd recommend her highly to any singer!
- Maddie (23)
I had been learning the whole cycle of Dichterliebe for my first performances and when I hear those first chords of 'Ich grolle nicht' I can't help but think of Louise's massive grin. Schumann is amazing, and so are you Louise.
- Helen (32, professional singer)
I sought advice from lovely Louise to help learn a song to sing to my daughter at her wedding. Whilst she may not have had time to do much about my singing technique, she did give me the confidence to go ahead with my plan. You have no idea what that lesson meant to us all, especially as you had been my daughter's singing teacher too; she described my performance as 'channeling my inner Elton John'.
