Bio

Maria O’Dea has been playing bassoon since age eleven, where she initially studied with John Hearne at TUDublin Conservatoire. She graduated from the Royal Irish Academy of Music in 2021 with a Diploma in Music Teaching and Performing. During her studies in Ireland, Maria was a dedicated member to many youth ensembles across Ireland including the National Youth Orchestra of Ireland and the Irish Youth Wind Ensemble. She regularly took part in Feis Ceoil, both as an orchestral player and soloist, winning the Senior Woodwind Prize in 2021.

Maria is currently in her final year of her undergraduate degree at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama under the tuition of Daniel Jemison, with thanks to the generous support of the Timothy Gee Scholarship. She has had the pleasure to participate in projects inside Guildhall such as Guildhall Symphony Orchestra, Guildhall Opera, UBU Ensemble and Guildhall Chamber Orchestra. She is also a member of the Guildhall Wind Soloists and the Anemoi Quintet. Maria works regularly with Guildhall composer students, and has premiered many new works.

Outside of Guildhall Maria has immersed herself in both Irish and UK music, performing with the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland, Ulster Orchestra,  Esker Festival Orchestra and Fidelio Orchestra. In the last year she has had the pleasure of working with Irish Heritage, performing at Wigmore Hall and the Royal Oversea’s League. This May, Maria performed at the West Wicklow Music Festival as part of the Rising Stars Recital alongside concert pianist Luke Lally Maguire. Maria plays on a 1990s’ Fox Model II Bassoon.
