Bio

Musical Background

I studied flute at the RNCM with Trevor Wye and was a Young Artist prize winner of the National Flute Association of America. Since graduating from the RNCM in 1987, I have been in constant, regular employment as a freelance performer. I am Principal flute with Sinfonia Viva and have regularly performed with orchestras such as the Halle, Manchester Camerata, Northern Ballet and the Philharmonia. I have been a Flute Tutor at Chetham’s School of Music for nearly 40 years and have been working regularly for the last 15 years as a flute tutor with the National Children’s Orchestras of Great Britain. I am also a flute examiner for MTB (Music Teachers’ Board), marking weekly online video and audio exams, so I fully realise the expectations required to achieve good results in instrumental exams. Each of these activities is hugely stimulating and fascinating, and I feel that they all complement each other.

I thoroughly enjoy teaching students of all ages and abilities, trying my very best to help them fully realise their potential and develop a passion for music-making, which they can enjoy as a lifelong skill. I feel privileged to be able to nurture young talent and to inspire budding musicians; it is very much a two-way process from which I learn and benefit alongside the students.

Teaching Info

I have 40 years’ experience of teaching complete beginners, right through to the established high-flyers at Chetham’s. I view every student as an individual, with their own particular strengths and areas for development, and I reflect on their progress regularly to ensure that lesson plans are appropriate and that goals are achievable.

Whether a student wins first prize in a national competition or simply learns to progress steadily from week to week, I thoroughly enjoy engaging with the learning process and encourage each student to achieve the best outcome that they can. It is so satisfying when a student achieves, be it obtaining an impressive exam result, receiving a place at a conservatoire or in a youth orchestra, or hearing the applause of an audience when they have performed in a concert.

I am always reviewing and looking for new teaching material and repertoire to use effectively in my teaching. I always try to ensure that students’ interests are considered to maximise their enjoyment. I aim to strike the correct balance between technical development and repertoire building, mixing important structured work with fun items in lessons.

I have a proven track record of success in exams, competitions and conservatoire  and orchestral auditions and have always shown a real commitment to my teaching work, alongside my professional playing. I have a reputation as a reliable member of staff in several organisations. I write weekly lesson notes in practice diaries so that the student can refer to these and I also encourage each student to practise regularly between lessons. I plan my diary carefully to ensure that my professional engagements do not impinge on my teaching commitments. I recognise how important continuity of lessons is for the ongoing and successful development of instrumental skills.

Rachel Holt flute tuition. My daughter Sophia has been studying flute with Rachel Holt for 3 years and she has progressed quickly under Rachel's expert tuition. Sophia enjoys Rachel's style of teaching, both face-to-face and via video-conferencing, and always looks forward to her lessons. Sophia will have many hours of flute lessons ahead of her as she continues to progress under Rachel's tuition. I would definitely recommend Rachel to any parent wishing to introduce their child to the flute or to develop their music skills further. Barbara M. Report review AlisonC-471 24 Jul 2020 Highly recommended My daughter has been having flute lessons with Rachel for about 18 months. Annabelle has loved all of her lessons and she has made super progress. Rachel is such a kind and friendly teacher and she makes all of the lessons enjoyable so Annabelle looks forward to her next one. Rachel writes detailed notes during the lessons that not only help Annabelle with her practice during the week but enables me to see what she has done and how I can help her at home. Annabelle also enjoyed watching Rachel perform a home concert during lockdown! Report review ChristianH-81 20 Jul 2020 Excellent flute tuition of a very high standard Rachel Holt has been supportive and knowledgeable in terms of teaching me the flute up to grade 8 standard. She has improved my confidence, technique and performance standard during the two years that she has been my teacher. Rachel is friendly and approachable and is committed to providing a high standard of tuition. Report review HayleyJ-122 20 Jul 2020 Amazing, patient flute teaching Rachel has been providing both in school and at home flute lessons for my 10 year old daughter for two years now. They started from nothing and she is playing beautifully, progressing through gradings at a good pace but also playing for enjoyment. Rachel is very patient and takes the time to explain not just flute playing but the basics of music as well. Both my daughter and I highly recommend lessons with Rachel and plan to continue for hopefully many years to come. Report review DianaG-64 19 Jul 2020 Rachel excels as a face-to-face/online flute tutor, providing a professional service. I met Rachel at a workshop 2 years ago. Her playing and conversation inspired me to want to play with a better tone. She listened to my desires and took on the challenge of correcting 50 years of bad habits. She has sensitively taken me back to the basics, including how to hold the flute, position my hands and head, how to breath correctly, use the muscles in my stomach and embouchure. She knew that correcting these details was important to attain a good tone. Tuition started face-to-face and continued online during the COVID-19 pandemic. Rachel is very patient, knows how to encourage; observes her students well, spotting even the smallest of details, persistently correcting where needed. She has a very pleasant, caring manor and a healthy interest in her pupils. Learning with her is a real joy, each lesson is progressive and rewarding. Thanks to Rachel’s professional tuition, I have an improved tone with better playing technique, giving me much more satisfaction.
