Bio

A classically trained professional orchestral musician, soloist and accompanist, I have been playing and teaching for over 35 years. I have performed with top orchestras such as LSO, LPO, CBSO, BBC Welsh Symphony & Scottish Ballet.

I am a Guildhall School of Music & Drama Graduate and worked as a BBC Cymru soloist & studied at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in Cardiff prior to leaving school. I am also a Music Psychologist & was awarded Graduate Membership and basis of registration as a BPS psychologist in 1997. My specialist area is performance anxiety/ stage fright.

I mainly compose bespoke songs and commissioned compositions, perform as an accompanist and freelance as an orchestral player and soloist. However I have also taught music in several top public and state schools including Harrow, Sherborne School for Girls and Broomfield House School as well as Bedfordshire and Kent Music Services.

I have over 30 years teaching experience & extended my practice to include online tuition 6 years ago so I am an experienced Skype teacher. I have students in the UK, Canada, USA, France, Germany & Switzerland. I genuinely love teaching music!

You can listen to recordings of some of my talented students, watch videos of my performances and see examples of my teaching sessions via short clips from Masterclasses, workshops and concerts saved on my website www.ruthsmusic.com

*please note that I am currently teaching online via Skype – due to the coronavirus situation*

Teaching Info

I have previously worked as an Ofsted Inspector and Music Examiner  in the past – so have a wealth of knowledge in relation to different teaching styles and approaches. I have also undertaken training in many different methods ( e.g. Suzuki and Kodalyetc) and but strongly believe in an individual approach to teaching and learning so pick and choose according to individual pupil needs.

I offer students opportunities for brief feedback if they send me videos or audios via Whatsapp during the week, in between lessons.

I create simple arrangements and backing tracks of modern pop songs for teenagers and play along opportunities to supplement lessons.

I believe that theory of music should be incorporated into practical lessons rather than taught separately.

I am a performance anxiety expert and am a qualified psychologist specialising in anxiety and coping -so offer coaching to musicians experiencing ongoing problems with stage fright/nerves.
