Slow Train Piano Lab is a network of creative learning music studios across the UK, teaching students to play the piano using chords. No exams or stress, just come and learn to play the music you love.

What will you learn?
At Slow Train Piano Lab you will learn how to play the piano by chords. This is the method used by all keyboardists in contemporary bands.
We will teach you how to voice chords, starting with simple shapes and gradually evolving into more complex and beautiful harmonies.
We will show you how to use these chords to play your favourite songs, whether you enjoy pop, rock, country, blues, jazz or contemporary worship.
We will teach you scales and arpeggios and how to use these to great effect when improvising over your chords.
Meet our teachers
Robert Mitchell
- Location: Mitcham, Borough of Merton, London

Robert is a renowned and versatile pianist, composer, and educator based in Mitcham, London. With an impressive career spanning performance, recording, and education, he brings a wealth of experience to every lesson. Robert studied at City University and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and has gone on to release 13 albums and perform with some of the UK’s leading jazz musicians. He has won three BBC Jazz Awards and has been nominated for multiple others, including Rising Star and Best New Work.
Robert’s teaching draws from decades of work as a soloist, band leader, and ensemble coach. He is a visiting composer and educator at the Royal Academy of Music, and has led projects at City University London, Middlesex University, WAC Arts, and more. His lessons are rich in creativity, musical depth, and improvisational freedom – helping students develop strong musical voices through both technique and expression. Jeremiah Daniel

Jeremiah is an experienced and passionate multi-instrumentalist and music educator with a Master’s degree in Music from Kingston University, London. With over a decade of teaching and performance experience, he offers lessons in piano, keyboard, acoustic, electric and bass guitar, as well as drums, ukulele, voice, and music theory. Jeremiah holds Grade 8 proficiency in piano and has a strong foundation in composition, conducting, and playing by ear.
His teaching style is creative, encouraging, and tailored to each student – helping learners of all ages develop confidence, musicality, and a genuine love of music. Outside of teaching, he’s an active performer, worship team director, and band member, regularly gigging across London.
David Harry

David grew up surrounded by instruments and was playingvarious instruments from an early age. He began to take music more seriously in his teens, playing in school bands and starting to experiment with music tech, recording and production. After finishing school he went on to study Music & Recording at Salford University, achieving a BA hons in the subject.
David has played and recorded around the world, working as a performing/session musician, an audio engineer, an artist as well as overseeing the running of various studios.
His credits include work for – Floating points, Massive Attack, The Pan African Orchestra, Faithless, Nigel Goodrich (Radiohead), BBC, Gucci…amongst many others.Alongside his creative work David has forged an enduring and successful music teaching career, working with children of all ages, SEN, young adults and mature students, both privately and in schools and colleges.

David is well equipped to teach internationally online from his studio or locally in person.

Jill Owens
- Location: Stroud Green London

Jill is a highly experienced pianist and piano teacher of over 25 years. She studied piano at The Royal Academy of Music (RAM) and is a member of the Musicians Union.
Jill has a very flexible open-minded approach to her teaching. Every student is unique, and she tailors the lessons accordingly. The most important thing is that their love of music is fostered and encouraged.
Jill has trained in jazz as well as her classical background. She also composes piano music: some are technical studies; some pieces she writes for specific students; and she also arranges famous songs, for example, currently she is composing an easy level ‘mash up’ of Halloween pieces and will do similar at Christmas.
Her theory knowledge is excellent, having gained a degree in music. Before she went to the RAM she gained the LRAM piano teaching diploma where there was a fair amount of theory.
Jill likes to encourage her students to be creative and curious. She has taught pop music from rock school grades to basic understanding of chord structure in songs and common progressions so they can both understand and then have the knowledge to create their own music. Many students want to be in a band, and this is encouraged as making music is not just great fun, but also good for team building and learning to blend. Students can very quickly grasp a basic knowledge of great chord progressions and learn to find and recognise them in many songs they know already but also create their own music with chords. A good knowledge of basic music theory is something Jill teaches through the practical piano lessons. Jill encourages a wide range of music with the emphasis on collaboration and FUN!
