Bio

Xavier Lowe is a cellist, viola da gamba player and musicologist specialised in chamber music of the Renaissance and Baroque periods. He is also a devoted teacher based in London. His work combines frequent performing with teaching. He is a core member of several Early Music ensembles that have established a strong presence in the Early Music scene within the UK and beyond.

Xavier has performed throughout Europe with Azur Ensemble, becoming finalist in the 2025 ROSL Chamber Music Competition in London. He was also awarded Second Prize in the Generación SMADE competition at the Estella Early Music Festival of Navarre, Spain, with Aglaia Ensemble. Xavier recently joined Stella Ensemble and performed with the group at the 2026 edition of Jeunes Talents in Paris. The ensemble has been invited again to Paris in 2027.

Xavier completed his Higher Degree in Baroque Cello at the Royal Conservatory of Music of Madrid, where he received an academic distinction in the instrument. At the same time, he completed a Bachelor’s Degree in Musicology at the Complutense University of Madrid in 2022. In 2023, Xavier was admitted to the Royal College of Music in London with a full scholarship generously funded by Linda Hill. He completed his Master’s Degree in Baroque Cello in 2025, receiving a further academic distinction in the instrument. He also studied viola da gamba as a second instrument under the tutelage of Reiko Ichise.

Xavier has performed for His Majesty Emperor Naruhito of Japan during his visit to London in 2024. He regularly performs as a continuo player with numerous orchestras including the Salamanca Baroque Orchestra. He has received tuition from prominent figures in the early music field, including Vittorio Ghielmi, Josetxu Obregón, Sarah McMahon, Andoni Mercero, Pedro Gandía, Itziar Atutxa, Guy Fishman and many others. He plays a cello made by Léon du Mougenot in 1902 and a bass viol donated by the Viola da Gamba Society.

Teaching Info

Lessons are structured around each student’s individual level, goals, and musical interests, providing a focused and supportive approach to learning.

Tuition covers the development of strong technical foundations, including posture, instrument technique, tone production, intonation, rhythm, sight-reading, and musical interpretation. For cello students, particular emphasis is placed on developing a secure playing technique, effective bow control, accurate intonation, and expressive musicianship.

Students will work on a carefully selected range of repertoire appropriate to their ability and interests, while also developing the skills and understanding needed to become confident, independent musicians. Lessons may also incorporate music theory, aural skills, and preparation for performances, examinations, or auditions where appropriate.

Tuition is available for all ages and levels of cello, piano and other instruments, with content and teaching methods tailored to the requirements and aspirations of each student.
